Jonathan “Doc” Susa

Farmers Insurance - Susa Agency

Helping Heroes Sporting Clay Tournament

Jonathan Susa started the competitive shooting match “Helping Heroes” after he’d learned of the traffic stop shooting of Loveland Police Department’s Sargent Garrett Osilka. Susa wanted to help in a practical way but didn’t have the means to do it himself, so he decided he’d gather numbers to make the greatest impact. Eight years later, Helping Heroes, combined with some other programs Susa uses, has allowed him to give back over $100,000 to his community.

Health4Heroes is honored to find support from Jonathan Susa. Susa says he appreciates the holistic way Health4Heroes looks at a person. He is passionate about people needing support with mental, physical, and financial growth—finances being Susa’s primary focus as an insurance agent. In his field, Susa has seen finances become a big stressor if not tended to early.

What Susa does for Health4Heroes is two-fold. First, he has Health4Heroes in the options for donation recipients from the Helping Heroes shooting tournament. Second, in his Pay It Forward program, if a member is sent to him for a review of their insurance coverage and other services that Farmers Insurance offers, then whether the client stays with Susa or not, Susa will send a cash donation directly to Health4Heroes. In that way, everyone works together helping each other out, whether that’s by spreading the word about available services or literally earning money for one another. In Susa’s words, “we all try to pal around and help out as many people as we can.”

  • CrossFit Bullies
  • Greeley, CO
  • Provider since March 2021

CrossFit Bullies, located in Greeley, is the perfect workout place for beginner CrossFitters, competitive athletes and everyone in between. From the moment anyone walks through the door, they will be welcomed as part of the Bully family. CrossFit Bullies is a community-focused gym that prioritizes proper movement mechanics and a healthy lifestyle to support a high quality of life, even as athletes age.

At CrossFit Bullies, they’ve seen first-hand how effective a preventative approach to health and wellness is to people. This “pragmatic approach” to supporting local Veterans and First Responders gave Knapp a connection to the organization that he hoped to help grow. Because of this, CrossFit Bullies has been honored to partner with Health4Heroes since the beginning.

When CrossFit Bullies heard the hype about the Guardian Games, it seemed like a great place to offer some support. Knapp has a lot of experience organizing and operating fitness competitions. Plus, given his experience as a former first responder, he said he was “excited at the opportunity to help create a special event that gives back to a group of people that can be overlooked and underappreciated at times.”

Why We Exist: Suicide among military service veterans and first responders is a very real and growing problem. The highly complex and challenging experiences of our Colorado veterans and first responders, and the rising number of suicides among both these groups, present the real need for affordable and accessible options to sustain the health and extend longevity of those who serve(d).

This year was especially challenging for nonprofit fundraising. Many of our large events were canceled due to COVID restrictions and we definitely felt it. We always look forward to attending and hosting events because it gives us a chance to interact with our members and supporters; this year we have missed those opportunities greatly.

Even with all the restrictions and the logistical difficulty of planning an event, along with the uncertainty that people might not be as willing to participate, the Knapp Bros took on the challenge and got to work planning their 3rd annual fundraiser for Health4Heroes formerly Vets4Life.

This year, their intention was to raise money to support the 15 active Health4Heroes members through our transition period; a period where the 15 veterans would have otherwise gone without and had to cover the cost themselves. This fundraiser speaks volumes about the level of support Kody & Kyle Knapp have for the veteran and first responder community and we couldn’t be more honored to have them as our longest standing allies.

Looking to join a CrossFit community that truly cares for each of their members? Look no further than CrossFit DNR, Health4Heroes’ only CrossFit provider in Fort Collins.
